Album of the Year?

Postby Svejk » Sun Dec 21, 2008 12:23 pm

As per the book thread, what single song or album has set your world alight this year?

I think mine would probably be the album "Velocifero" by Ladytron, their 4th studio outing and extremely enjoyable!

I don't think I have any albums that were recorded this year so I'll name one that I got this year - Pain by Numbers by The Meat Purveyors. Songs about drinking, drugs, sex and betrayal all beautifully sung by female lead vocalist, Jo Stanli Cohen.

Great tunes, great humour. Opening song TMP Smackdown starts with the line, Guy walks up to a girl in a bar, asks what do you do? And she says "tar"! (heroine).

You can download that track here:

Next song is titled How can I be so thirsty today (when I had so much to drink last night). Classic stuff.

I have been listening to my copy of 'Pain by Numbers' - thanks princessmoog by the way. I think I may actually get myself a copy and a copy of the 'all relationships are doomed to fail' album. The lyrics are peppered with irony like a crunchy salad drizzled with chilli oil – refreshing and warm.

Glad you like it Boozy - we'll make a cowboy of you yet! I love the lyrics and their way with a fiddle! I'm currently listening to Sweet in the Pants also by TMP, which Ali got me when she bought Pain by Numbers cos it only cost 99p! Perhaps not as immediate as Pain by Numbers but there are some lovely tunes, and the same combination of bittersweet / feisty lyrics to smile at.

Hi Slugger. MGMT. I'm sure you will have heard 'Time to Pretend', couldn't escape it last year. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XVnRzEjpUmE
I think the reason I love the album so much is that it has a nostalgia of the early '90s for me, when I was a teenager. 'Kids' is my favourite track.

I'm pretty sure I won't have heard it. I have no access to new music these days!

Or at least I didn't until we just bought a new DAB clock radio thingy. so now I have BBC 6 music as my alarm station instead of those dullards at BBC 5 live. It's great - really good sound and good music from what I've heard so far. Nothing new yet tho, I don't think.

I realised I did get a new album last year. It was Brighter than creation's dark by the Drive-by Truckers. Very good.

So that's my best album of 2008, actually released in 2008.

6 Music is great. I recommend Stuart Maconie's Sunday evening show "The Freakzone" for some interesting stuff, and also Guy Garvey's Sunday night show is very good (he's the singer from Elbow). Gideon Coe on a Monday-Thursday evening is pretty good as well, but not a patch on the old "Dream Ticket" show that used to be hosted by Jane Gazzo - that was magic.

They play a lot of old Peel sessions on 6 Music which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much. I think of it as his spiritual home.

Am also a fan of 6 Music. Can't stand the shite music & egocentric DJs on Radio 1, Radio 2 is a bit MoR for me most of the time & I'm not intellectual enough for Radio 4 (plus no music, which is what I want from a Radio station). So, I find 6 to be the perfect station for me. Most of the DJs are actually musos, rather than egos & it's a good mix of classic stuff & new bands. Just wish we had a digital radio in the car.

There, that's my review :D
